Many moons ago, we embarked on a journey with members of Chicago-based Origin of Animal. Our unified intention was to re-imagine four Bifunkal tunes with multi-voice orchestration. Tetra is the product of that experiment.

Notable notes:

-These original compositions by Bifunkal underwent a significant evolution to reach this recorded state, beginning with rough lead sheets transcribed by Hershyl Edwards, then orchestrations and arrangements developed by David Keller and Hershyl Edwards, a live performance, further refinement, and then additional arrangement when we reached the studio and looked in the mirror. It was a fun process -- you should try it.

-Everything was mastered through an amazing collage of the best vintage and modern outboard gear. Huge thanks to Rick Barnes for taking the many hours of time required to patch all that together. Go to Rax Trax.

-The addition of Larry Beers late in the game brought our percussion elements to an entirely higher level. Especially reverse wind chimes and inventive metric modulation on the bongos. Love you, Larry.

-Most of these songs feature not one, but two upright basses. Try convincing your engineer to hop on that train at your next dual-bass session.

Bifunkal is a two-piece band based in Chicago that believes in live looping, vocal bass, and the power of rock.

Bifunkal is Hershyl Edwards (drums, vocal bass, loops, vox) and Jesse Crydeman (guitar, loops, vox). Hershyl is a unique bird, in that he sings the bass lines (into an octave pedal) while playing drums. Sometimes he even loops the vocal bass, and then sings--all while playing drums. ... more
